Caseback
Also called case back
The caseback is the back cover of the watch case, which seals the movement inside. It can be solid, often engraved, or a display caseback with a window.
Casebacks carry useful information, such as reference numbers, engravings, and sometimes serial numbers, and the fit and condition of the back can show whether a watch has been opened carelessly.
Look for tool marks around the edge, which suggest amateur opening, and check that any engravings match the reference.
Engravings from previous owners, such as names or dates, can narrow a watch's appeal, though a documented, meaningful engraving occasionally adds interest to a vintage piece.
