What to check before you buy
- Inspect the transparent case back closely, including its anti-reflective coating. It is unusual on an Oyster case, it faces the wrist, and marks on it are both visible and awkward to remedy.
- Check the honeycomb dial texture is even across the whole surface and under the markers. A textured dial shows handling damage and moisture marking far more readily than a flat one.
- Confirm the movement is the 7135 with a Syloxi hairspring rather than one of the Parachrom calibres. The 66-hour reserve belongs to this movement family, not the 70-hour ones.
- Open and close the concealed Crownclasp repeatedly and check it latches firmly, since a hidden clasp is rarely examined and carries the bracelet's full load.
- Look along the flat Jubilee for link play. Five-piece links in a flat profile hide stretch better than a domed bracelet does, so test by feel rather than by eye.
An Oyster you can see into
This is the detail that makes the reference unusual. Every other Oyster-cased Rolex on this site is specified with a solid, screw-down back — that closure is part of how the case is described as achieving its rating.
The Land-Dweller keeps the Oyster architecture, the Twinlock crown and 100 metres, and adds a transparent case back with anti-reflective coating. Among the references on this site, the only other display back is on the 1908, which is not an Oyster at all.
For inspection, that means applying a habit from dress watches to a watch that otherwise looks like a Datejust: examine the back. It faces the wrist, it is coated sapphire, and belt buckles and desk edges will find it.
Syloxi, and the 66 hours that come with it
The calibre 7135 uses a Syloxi hairspring in silicon with patented geometry, rather than the paramagnetic blue Parachrom found in the 3230, 3235, 3255, 3285 and 4131 elsewhere in this corpus.
It carries approximately 66 hours, not seventy or seventy-two. That number is the quick tell: if a listing claims seventy hours for this reference, either the reserve or the calibre is being quoted from another watch.
The same hairspring appears in the 1908's calibre 7140, which is a useful association to hold — Syloxi and 66 hours travel together across these two references.
A honeycomb dial hides nothing
The dial carries a honeycomb motif in intense white. Textured dials are visually striking and unforgiving to own.
Any moisture that reaches the dial, any fingerprint pressed into it during a careless service, any uneven ageing — all of it shows against a regular geometric pattern in a way it would never show on a flat sunburst. Examine it across the full surface and especially where the pattern meets the applied markers, which is where disturbance concentrates.
Flat Jubilee, concealed clasp
A flat Jubilee in five-piece solid links, closed by a concealed folding Crownclasp — the same hidden closure used on the gold Day-Date.
The flat profile is the complication for inspection. A domed Jubilee shows stretch as visible droop; a flat one holds its line for longer and hides play until it is significant. Test this one by feel: hold it horizontally and work it gently, looking for movement you can feel rather than see.
