What to check before you buy

  • Confirm the crown is at 9 o'clock and the helium escape valve at 3. On this reference the two are reversed relative to the standard Pelagos, and a watch with them the usual way round is a different reference.
  • Photograph the number engraved on the steel case back and record it, because a numbered back is part of what a buyer is acquiring.
  • Check the date alternates red for even days and black for odd ones across a full change, which is specified behaviour rather than a fault.
  • Verify the calibre is the MT5612-LHD variant and not the standard MT5612, since TUDOR gives it a distinct designation.
  • Note the beige luminescent coating on the bezel and confirm it matches the dial under a torch, since beige and white lume read very differently in the dark.

Everything is on the wrong side, deliberately

LHD stands for left-hand drive, and on this reference it means exactly what it says.

The crown is at 9 o'clock. The helium escape valve is at 3. On the standard Pelagos those positions are the other way round — crown right, valve left.

That single reversal is the reference. It is also the first thing to verify, because it is unambiguous: look at the case in any photograph and the crown is either on the left or it is not. A watch offered as an LHD with a crown at three is a different reference, whatever the seller has written.

Two more things follow from it in practice. Setting the watch means turning it the other way in the hand, which is worth demonstrating at handover to anyone who has not owned one. And the crown guards, the tube and the valve surround are all mirrored, so parts from a standard Pelagos are not interchangeable here.

A numbered case back

TUDOR specifies a numbered steel case back.

On a watch with an individually engraved number, that engraving is part of the object rather than a detail. Buyers ask for it before committing, and a record of it protects you as much as them.

So photograph it clearly, straight on and in focus, at the buy. Write it into your inventory. Quote it in the listing.

Check, too, that it is legible and crisp. A number polished faint is a real deduction on a numbered reference, and it also raises the question of what else the case has been through.

The date is red and black on purpose

The dial specification reads: date at 3 o'clock with even numbered days displayed in red and odd numbered days in black.

That alternation is deliberate — a roulette date, a detail borrowed from military-issue diving watches — and it is the sort of thing an unfamiliar inspector flags as a fault or a replaced date disc.

It is neither. Advance the date through several days and confirm the alternation holds: even in red, odd in black, all the way round. A break in that pattern would be the finding; the pattern itself is the specification.

A calibre with its own designation

The movement is the Manufacture Calibre MT5612-LHD, COSC certified, approximately 70 hours.

Note the suffix. TUDOR distinguishes it from the standard MT5612 fitted to the 42mm Pelagos, because the movement is configured for a crown on the opposite side.

Quote the designation with its suffix. It is a small precision that signals to a knowledgeable buyer that you read the reference's own documentation rather than its family's.

Beige lume, not white

The bezel carries graduations with beige luminescent coating, where the standard 42mm Pelagos uses white.

Beige luminescent material is chosen for its warm, aged appearance in daylight. In the dark it should still glow and fade in step with the dial's markers.

So do the torch test as usual, but calibrate your expectation: what you are checking is that the bezel and dial match each other, not that they are white. A bezel insert replaced with a white-lume part from another Pelagos is obvious in daylight and would be a significant finding.

The rest

500 metres on a 42mm titanium and steel case with a titanium screw-down crown, a unidirectional titanium bezel with a ceramic matt black disc, sapphire crystal, and a steel folding clasp carrying TUDOR's own patented bracelet extension.

As on every used diver: the depth figure is what the factory built to, not what anyone has measured on this watch.
