Ghost bezel
Also called faded bezel
A ghost bezel is a bezel insert, usually on an older dive or travel watch, whose colour has faded dramatically over time, often from black or blue to a pale grey or blue.
Like other forms of natural ageing, a genuinely faded insert can appeal to collectors of vintage pieces. It can also simply be worn or replaced, so it's worth checking whether the insert is original to the watch.
When buying, look at whether the fading matches the rest of the watch's condition, and whether the insert's printing and fit are consistent with the reference.
What a faded insert does to the price
On a collectible vintage reference, an even, original fade can add interest, and some buyers seek it out. On a modern watch, the same fading reads as wear, and buyers price in a replacement insert. Know which kind of watch you're holding before you decide what the bezel is worth.
Checking that it's original
Replacement and aftermarket inserts are common, and some are aged to look the part. Compare the font, spacing and markings with verified examples of the reference, and check that the insert's ageing fits the rest of the watch, including the lume on the dial. When in doubt, describe it as you see it rather than calling it original. The guide to buying vintage watches covers originality checks more broadly.
