Shock protection
Also called shock absorber, shock absorbers, Paraflex
Shock protection is a system of spring-mounted jewel settings that let the delicate balance staff move under impact and then return to position, preventing broken pivots.
Most modern mechanical movements have it, and it's one reason modern watches survive everyday knocks. Older and some vintage movements may lack it, making them more fragile.
For a vintage watch without shock protection, handle it carefully and mention its fragility to buyers who plan to wear it daily.
Even with shock protection, a hard drop can still damage a movement, so a watch that has been dropped deserves a timing check before it's sold.
