Automatic movement
Also called self-winding movement, self-winding
An automatic, or self-winding, movement is a mechanical movement that winds itself as the wearer moves, using a weighted rotor that turns and tightens the mainspring.
Most modern luxury watches are automatic. If an automatic watch isn't worn, it will eventually stop and need winding or a watch winder, which is normal and not a fault.
When testing an automatic watch, check that it can also be wound by hand if the movement allows, and listen and feel for anything rough in the winding. A rotor that feels loose or noisy may point to a service need.
