Escapement
The escapement is the part of a mechanical movement that releases the mainspring's energy in small, regular steps, giving the balance its impulses and producing the watch's tick.
Most mechanical watches use a lever escapement. Alternatives exist, such as the co-axial escapement, which is designed to reduce friction and lengthen service intervals.
For a buyer or seller, the escapement matters mostly through its effect on timekeeping and servicing, which a timegrapher test and service history will reveal.
Escapement problems usually show up as poor or erratic timekeeping, which is why a timing check belongs in every intake.
