Form 1099-K

Also called 1099-K

Form 1099-K is the information return payment platforms and marketplaces file with the IRS to report payments made to sellers, with a copy sent to the seller.[1]

It reports gross payments, not profit, so a dealer's 1099-K total will usually be far higher than taxable income once cost of goods and expenses are deducted. The reporting threshold has changed more than once, so check the current figure at filing time.

Keep records that reconcile your 1099-K amounts with your actual sales and costs.

  1. IRS - Understanding Your Form 1099-K. Form 1099-K is a report of PAYMENTS YOU RECEIVED FOR GOODS OR SERVICES during the year from (a) credit; debit or stored value cards such as gift cards (PAYMENT CARDS); and (b) PAYMENT APPS OR ONLINE MARKETPLACES; also called THIRD PARTY SETTLEMENT ORGANIZATIONS (TPSOs). These organizations must send copies to the IRS and to you BY JANUARY 31. TWO DIFFERENT RULES APPLY. IF YOU TAKE DIRECT PAYMENT BY CREDIT OR BANK CARD; you will get a Form 1099-K from your payment card processor NO MATTER HOW MANY PAYMENTS YOU GOT OR HOW MUCH THEY WERE FOR - there is no threshold on the payment card limb. IF YOU USED A PAYMENT APP OR ONLINE MARKETPLACE; the TPSO is required to send a Form 1099-K IF THE PAYMENTS YOU RECEIVED FOR GOODS OR SERVICES TOTAL OVER $20;000 IN MORE THAN 200 TRANSACTIONS; HOWEVER THEY MAY SEND ONE WITH LOWER AMOUNTS AND/OR TRANSACTIONS. Listed platform types include payment apps; online community marketplaces; craft or maker marketplaces; AUCTION SITES; car sharing or ride-hailing platforms; ticket exchange or resale sites; crowdfunding platforms and freelance marketplaces; IF YOU ACCEPT PAYMENTS ON DIFFERENT PLATFORMS YOU COULD GET MORE THAN ONE FORM 1099-K. REPORTING THRESHOLD: TPSOs are required to report when the total for goods or services through the platform EXCEEDS $20;000 IN MORE THAN 200 TRANSACTIONS. REMINDER STATED BY THE IRS: WHETHER OR NOT YOU RECEIVE A FORM 1099-K YOU MUST STILL REPORT ANY INCOME ON YOUR TAX RETURN; including payments for any goods you sell. Money received from friends and family AS A GIFT OR REPAYMENT FOR A PERSONAL EXPENSE should not be reported on a Form 1099-K and is not taxable income. NOTE: the TPSO threshold has been changed by legislation more than once; the figures above are those published by the IRS on this page at the retrieval date — retrieved 2026-09-23
