What to check before you buy

  • Establish whether both bracelets are present. Cartier ships this reference with a steel bracelet and a second calfskin one, so a watch arriving with only the steel is an incomplete set.
  • Work the QuickSwitch release on both bracelets and refit each once. It is the mechanism that makes the second bracelet usable, and a seized release turns a two-bracelet watch into a one-bracelet watch.
  • Run the SmartLink sizing through a link removal and refit. It is toolless by design, the pushers are small, and a bent one is the commonest damage on this bracelet.
  • Inspect the synthetic spinel in the crown for chips and confirm it is seated. It is a set stone in a component that is handled every time the watch is set.
  • Check the exposed screws on the bezel and bracelet for burring. They are the design signature of the Santos and they are what a previous owner reaches for with the wrong screwdriver.

Three systems, and what goes missing

Cartier lists more removable hardware on this reference than on anything else documented here, and every item is something that can fail to arrive.

Two bracelets. A steel bracelet and a second in calfskin. Both are part of the product as sold, not accessories.

QuickSwitch. A release under the bracelet that lets either one come off without tools.

SmartLink. A sizing system that lets links come out without tools either.

So the first question at the buy is not about the watch at all — it is what came in the box. A Santos with one bracelet is an incomplete set and should be priced as one. Establish it before you agree a number, photograph everything, and list the contents explicitly.

Then test both systems rather than trusting them:

  • Release each bracelet and refit it once. A seized QuickSwitch makes the second bracelet decorative.
  • Take a SmartLink out and put it back. The pushers are small and are the commonest damage on this bracelet — usually from someone who tried it with a tool it never needed.

Ask where any removed links are while you are there.

Screws are the design and the weak point

The Santos is built around exposed screws on the bezel and bracelet. They are the visual signature of the reference and they are the first thing a previous owner attacks with a screwdriver that does not fit.

Look at every screw head under a loupe. You are checking three things: that the slots are crisp rather than burred, that the screws sit flush, and that they are all aligned consistently if the example has been apart.

Chewed screw heads are visible from normal viewing distance once you know to look, and they are what separates a careful owner from a careless one more reliably than the case finish does.

The crown carries a stone

The crown is specified as 7-sided, set with a faceted synthetic spinel.

That makes it a set stone in a working part — handled every time the watch is wound or set, and exposed on the side of the case where knocks land.

Check it under a loupe for chips along the facet edges, and press gently to confirm it is seated rather than loose. It is replaceable in principle, but a damaged or missing stone is an obvious fault on a watch whose crown is one of its recognisable features.

What Cartier does not publish

The specification here is shorter than most in this corpus. Cartier states the calibre 1847 MC, that it is mechanical with automatic winding, a case width of 39.8 mm, a thickness of 9.38 mm, sapphire crystal, a silvered opaline dial with steel sword-shaped hands, and 10 bar.

It does not publish a power reserve, a lug width, or a lug-to-lug span.

Two consequences. Do not quote a reserve figure for this watch from anywhere — Cartier has not stated one, and a number from a forum is not a specification. And because the Santos uses an integrated bracelet with no conventional lug opening, a strap question is answered by the QuickSwitch system rather than by a millimetre figure.

Water resistance is 10 bar (approx. 100 meters/328 feet) — a genuine everyday rating, and higher than the 3 bar Cartier states across most of its dress references.
