Rolex Sky-Dweller 336934: specifications and what to check
An annual calendar with dual time zones, set entirely through a rotating bezel rather than a pusher. The most complicated watch here, and the one where the setting mechanism itself is what you inspect.

What to check before you buy
- Rotate the Ring Command bezel through each of its settings and confirm it selects cleanly. On this reference the bezel is the setting interface, so a bezel that does not index properly makes the complications unusable.
- Check all twelve month apertures around the dial circumference. Only one should be highlighted, it should correspond to the current month, and the others must read cleanly.
- Advance the date across a month boundary if you can. An annual calendar should step correctly at the end of a short month, and that is the one behaviour that distinguishes it from a simple date.
- Confirm the second time zone disc is properly synchronised with the main hands rather than sitting an hour out, which is a common mis-set rather than a fault but should be corrected before sale.
- Inspect the white gold fluted bezel for flattened peaks, the same wear pattern as on any gold fluted bezel — here complicated by the fact that this one rotates and is handled deliberately.
The bezel is the interface
On every other Rolex in this corpus the bezel either times something or does nothing. Here it is a control. Rolex calls it Ring Command: a fluted, bidirectional rotating bezel that selects which function the winding crown will adjust.
That single design choice determines how you inspect one. The bezel is not cosmetic and it is not a timing instrument — it is the way an owner reaches the annual calendar, the date, and the local hour. If it does not index crisply into each position, the watch's complications become difficult or impossible to set correctly.
Rotate it through its full range before anything else. It should move with defined detents rather than vaguely.
Twelve apertures, one month
The month is displayed through twelve small apertures spaced around the circumference of the dial, with the current month highlighted. It is an unusually elegant solution and an unusually specific thing to check.
Look at every aperture, not just the highlighted one. All twelve should be clean and correctly registered against the hour markers, and exactly one should be showing. A display that is misaligned, or where two read ambiguously, is telling you the calendar mechanism is not correctly set or not correctly working.
An annual calendar has one job to prove
The calibre 9002 runs an instantaneous annual calendar: it knows the difference between a 30-day and a 31-day month, and needs correcting only once a year at the end of February.
The only way to verify that is to watch it change. If you can hold the watch across a month boundary, or wind it forward to one, do — a mechanism that steps correctly at the end of a short month is doing the thing the reference exists to do. A simple date complication cannot.
Gold flutes that turn
The bezel is white gold, fluted, and — unlike the fixed fluted bezel on the Datejust — it is designed to be gripped and rotated.
That combination is worth thinking about on a used example. Soft metal, sharp machined peaks, and a component the owner is expected to handle regularly. Examine the flutes for flattening and for the polishing marks that come from fingernails and cuffs rather than from a bench.
