Cartier against Grand Seiko

Cartier WSBB0044 vs Grand Seiko SBGX353

9 published specifications differ between these two. Every figure below is what the manufacturer states for that reference; nothing is inferred from the other watch.

Stated for one, not the other

These rows cannot be compared, because one maker publishes the figure and the other does not. An empty cell is a gap in the manufacturer's documentation, not a gap in the watch — and not a licence to fill it in from the other column.

What the differences cost you

Each note below follows from the published figures in the tables above — what they mean for intake, for a listing, and for the handover. Nothing here estimates a price or a margin.

You will have to measure one of these

Lug to lug is published for the SBGX353 but not for the WSBB0044. It is the figure that actually predicts fit, so measure the WSBB0044 yourself with callipers and say in the listing that the number is your own measurement, not the maker's.

Do not describe these the same way

The SBGX353 is rated to 0 metres and the WSBB0044 to 30. A rating is a factory figure for a new watch with fresh gaskets, not a promise about a used one — but the gap still matters in writing. Describe the SBGX353 in words a buyer can act on, and do not let a template carry the WSBB0044's language onto it.

Two different ownership conversations

The WSBB0044 is self-winding and the SBGX353 is quartz. That changes what a buyer needs telling at handover, and it changes intake: a hand-wound watch has no rotor to mask a tired mainspring, and a stopped quartz watch is usually a battery rather than a fault.

What to check on each

WSBB0044

  • Quote the thickness alongside the diameter. At 10.16 mm on a 33 mm case this is tall for its width, which is how a Ballon Bleu actually wears.
  • Work the crown and the guard around it. The protective arc over the crown is the design signature of this model and a knock that has bent it is both visible and awkward to correct.
  • Examine the guilloche dial across its whole surface at several angles, because a machined pattern records moisture and handling far more readily than a flat dial.

SBGX353

  • Read the water resistance as written. Grand Seiko says splash resistant, not a bar figure, which means hand-washing is the limit and swimming is not contemplated at all.
  • Check the second hand lands exactly on each index, not near it. Precise hand alignment is one of the things the 9F calibre family is built around, and a hand that misses its marker is a visible defect on a watch sold on precision.
  • Confirm the box crystal is free of edge chips. A raised sapphire profile on a small dress case has nothing to shield it, and the glass fractures rather than scratches.
