Stated for one, not the other

These rows cannot be compared, because one maker publishes the figure and the other does not. An empty cell is a gap in the manufacturer's documentation, not a gap in the watch — and not a licence to fill it in from the other column.

What the differences cost you

Each note below follows from the published figures in the tables above — what they mean for intake, for a listing, and for the handover. Nothing here estimates a price or a margin.

These reach different buyers

38 mm on the U10340161C1A1 against 36 mm on the A10320101A1A1. Diameter is a poor predictor of how a watch actually sits, but it is the field buyers filter on, so the two land in front of different people. Do not let one listing's photographs or copy stand in for the other.

One of these is a different asset to hold

The U10340161C1A1 has a gold case and the A10320101A1A1 is steel. That is not just a price difference: a precious-metal case changes what your insurer needs told, how the piece should be stored and handled, and — in some jurisdictions — whether trading it puts you under a precious-metals rule your steel stock would not. Check your own city guide before you assume they are the same transaction.

What to check on each

A10320101A1A1

  • Photograph the mother-of-pearl dial from at least three angles. It is a natural material whose figuring differs on every example, so a single flat image does not describe the watch a buyer will receive.
  • Look for hairline cracks and lifted edges in the nacre under a loupe, particularly around the date aperture and the applied markers where the material is cut.
  • Note that this page publishes no crystal, bezel or case back line. Do not fill those gaps from another Chronomat, and say in the listing that the maker does not state them.

U10340161C1A1

  • Read the crown specification before you describe this as a dive watch. It is a Superocean rated to 100 metres with a crown that does not screw down, which is not the same proposition as the 300-metre references in the same family.
  • Check where the red gold is and where the steel is, then judge wear separately on each. Gold is softer, marks more readily and cannot be refinished as freely, so a two-metal case wears unevenly by nature.
  • Confirm the bezel turns both ways. It is specified as bidirectional here, unlike the unidirectional bezels on the dive-rated Superoceans, and a stiff one is a fault rather than a safety catch.
